Give your garbage another life. Recycle.
Many Americans recycle today and more say they are educated on environmental issues than ever before. Still, despite heightened visibility of public recycling receptacles and more curbside programs, levels of recycling are low and there is so much more that we could do.
- In 2013, Americans generated about 254 million tons of trash and recycled and composted 87 million tons of this material, equivalent to a 34.3 percent recycling rate.
- On average, Americans recycle and compost 1.51 pounds of individual waste generation of 4.4 pounds per person per day.
- Today, 73% of Americans have access to curbside recycling programs. Even so, only about a third of the 1,600 pounds of garbage every American generates each year gets recycled or composted.
